When to Install a Jackshaft Garage Door Opener

A jackshaft garage door opener isn’t made for every garage. These systems require at least seven inches of space on either end of the garage door. However, there are certain times when a jackshaft system will work better than a traditional system.

When the Garage Has a High Ceiling

If your garage has a ceiling that is ten or twelve feet high, but the garage door is only 8 feet, it means you have a lot of extra vertical storage. Installing a traditional trolley garage door opener would impede the use of much of that space. A jackshaft garage door opener allows you to maintain the majority of that storage space.

When the Garage Ceiling is Sloped

If the ceiling in your garage slopes in the back, it might be difficult to install a traditional trolley garage door opener. An end mounted garage door opener will work regardless of how the ceiling is shaped.

When the Garage Ceiling is Too Low

A traditional garage door opening system requires at least 48 inches of clearance above the door to be able to install the pulley shaft. The jackshaft garage door opener only needs three inches of clearance. If you don’t have enough space in your garage to comfortably install a traditional garage door opener, an end mounted system is your next best choice.
