Garage Door Springs: Everything You Need to Know

Exterior view of garage door.

Are your garage door springs broken?

Your garage doors – they seem simple enough. That is, until the spring breaks, leaving you wondering about your next steps. So what should be done first? Well, perhaps the first thing you should know is not to try opening your garage door without the springs it needs to operate properly.

The springs in your garage door act as an important support for the weight of the door itself. So while it may be possible to open and close the door, we recommend not attempting it. Not unless it’s an actual emergency. So keeping that in mind, what do you need to know for the replacement of your garage door springs?

Types of Garage Door Springs

Another of the big things to keep in mind when you need replacement garage door springs is that there are two main types of springs available. The type you need will depend on a few factors.

Torsion Springs

These are the most common type of garage door springs and can be identified by looking at the way they operate. Rather than stretching out like most springs, they function through the use of torque, which is a twisting motion and pressure that causes the coils of the spring to rotate. Torsion springs tend to be sturdy overall.

Extension Springs

As their name suggests, extension springs stretch out and extend during operation. These springs will also extend further the more the garage door is opened. Overall, they are under a great deal of force which is why they are typically paired with safety cables to ensure safe operation.

In addition to a difference in the way these springs function, there are a few other things to bear in mind. Extension springs tend to be a more affordable option, though they also tend to have a shorter lifespan compared to torsion springs.

How to Measure a Garage Door Spring

While there are different types of garage door springs to bear in mind, you should also note that these springs come in different sizes and lengths. This makes it important to know how to measure a garage door spring if you will be purchasing them yourself so you can ensure you choose the right garage door springs overall.

Overall, measuring garage door springs is fairly simple and you do not have to stretch them out to get the right measurement. For unbroken and unwound torsion springs, measure from the first coil on one side to the last coil on the other. You will also want the inner diameter of the spring, though note that this is often written on the cone.

Getting the right size with extension springs often comes down to noting the height of your garage door. Typically, 25” springs are used for a garage door of seven feet, while 27” springs are used for garage doors of eight feet.

Regardless of the type of spring you are getting, there are other factors you will want to bear in mind as well when choosing replacement springs. Among the most important of these is having the weight of the garage door itself if possible. If you are uncertain of or unable to get any of this information, for safety purposes it is typically best to have professional help with garage door spring replacement.

The Power of Garage Door Springs

Safety has been mentioned several times now as an important factor when working with garage door springs, and there is a good reason for this. Garage door springs are placed under a tremendous amount of power while doing their job, which can lead to issues such as snapping and even cause potential injury if not taken care of properly.

Torsion springs will exert the same amount of power as the weight of the door they are being used to operate. For example, a garage door that weighs approximately 250 pounds will require springs capable of providing 250 pounds worth of force.

Durable garage doors

Whether your garage is attached to the house in the back or the front, or maybe it is a stand-alone structure, the door is a part of your home’s appearance and curb appeal. You want it to be operational, to look good, and be long lasting.   Not all that long ago, all garage doors were wood, then metal garage doors came out, aluminum, steel, etc.

Wood garage doors have a more classic look, but they don’t stand up to the climate, elements, and bikes or cars like a metal garage door does. Today, they make metal garage doors look like wood, so you get the best of both. Metal = stability. Wood = classic. You can get a metal garage door with glass windows too, in various shapes and sizes, to match your home’s architecture.

One thing that many preferred a wood garage door over a metal garage door was the ability to paint it when the house was painted.  So, can metal garage doors be painted? A metal garage door can come in many colors today so that they match your home’s exterior, but yes, you can paint your metal garage door if you desire.

There are two pointers to note about painting a metal garage door:

  • Never paint it while it is cold, wet, or too hot
  • Use top quality exterior latex house paint

You need to paint your metal garage door at the optimum temperature so that the metal alloy settle. Otherwise, when the temperature causes the metal garage door to expand and shift, the paint won’t crack. Using a prime quality of paint will give you the best, long-lasting results. If you paint the metal garage door frame, be sure to give it plenty of time to dry with the door open so that the paint doesn’t dry the door shut.

Before you paint though, preparing metal garage door for painting should be completed first:

  • Pressure wash both inside and outside the metal garage door
  • Allow to air dry then lightly sand over the entire door with a sanding block to remove cobwebs, dirt, grime, and grit
  • Rinse with power washer again and allow to air dry
  • Lay an old blanket or drop cloth under the door for drips
  • Tape around the trim and windows
  • Paint one panel lengthwise and then the next panel
  • Open the door upwards so the hinges separate before painting the ends
  • While the door is up, paint in between each panel

Why are garage doors metal?

Shopping for anything of value can be a headache, and that includes a garage door. There are so many choices in materials and style, which one is the best one for you and your home? The garage has become more important in our lives the past few decades. The garage is as big a decision as the interior floor plans of the house, including if a metal garage door is important.

Here, we have listed the benefits of a metal garage door and why to most homeowners, why they choose a metal garage door over other materials for a garage door:

  1. A Better Value: Yes, a metal garage door is more expensive, but they have a longer lifespan than one made from natural or synthetic materials. The galvanized steel metal doors of today are rust resistant and rot resistant, an important feature in Colorado weather.
  2. Safe and Secure: A metal garage door is stronger than garage doors made from other materials. They can hold up to and resist being attacked by a would-be thief because there aren’t the usual weak spots that composite, fiberglass, or wooden garage doors do. They are also fire resistant, a plus for the homeowner’s insurance.
  3. Energy Efficient: A metal garage door is insulated in either a multi-layer or sandwich-type, allowing you to choose a higher R-Value of insulation, which is a significant benefit in Colorado winters!
  4. A Beautiful Addition: A metal garage door can be molded and stamped into a variety of attractive shapes today. You can choose a window panel and a wide choice of finishes and textures. A metal garage door can be made to look like wood.
  5. Minimal Maintenance: When a garage door fails, it will typically do it at an inconvenient time, unless it is a metal garage door. Because they are lightweight, they’re easier to raise a lower manually if needed and the don’t wear out their mechanical parts as fast.
New garage installation on new home

Are wood or steel garage doors better?

There are two options that homeowners typically choose when buying a new garage door. Either a metal garage door or a wooden garage door. How do they decide which is better? The following are factors that are considered:

  • The Look: Wooden garage doors are designed for beauty and elegance, come in a variety of colors, looks, and sizes and the improvement to the curb appeal is immediate. A garage door is semi-customize or completely customized, a metal garage door is mass produced and purchased pre-assembled.
  • The Installation: A metal garage door is easier to install because it is lighter than a wooden garage door. Even with a wooden garage door, the upgrade of an automatic garage door opener is something to consider due to the weight.
  • The Costs: A metal garage door is less expensive than a wooden garage door for two reasons. The materials and manufacturing and the installation is easier and faster. All of this makes for make the metal garage door is the less expensive of the two.
  • The Maintenance: A wooden garage door will require more maintenance than a metal garage door, such as sanding, painting, or staining every few years. A wooden garage door will absorb moisture, which is an attraction for insects and mold. A metal garage door will have an overlay to protect the color should it be dented.
  • The Energy Efficiency: Both types of garage doors, a metal garage door or a wooden garage door are available insulated. A wooden garage door has more quietening to it.
  • Do steel garage doors rust?: With a fiberglass overlay or topcoat applied on a metal garage door can prevent it from rusting.  The cheaper the metal, the more likely that a dent or ding can chip the paint, and rust will soon follow.

How long do steel garage doors last?

With proper care and maintenance, a metal garage door and a wooden garage door can last 20 years or longer. The mechanics and torsion springs get the most work and will give you 20,000 cycles.

Choose a garage door is a big decision, you want to make sure you get the one you can afford. It may be worth stretching the budget a bit to choose a better-made door. If you have plans for selling your home in the near future, the more expensive door will help your home sell faster and you’ll have a higher ROI. Do I Need to Reinforce my Garage Door?

garage door repair

What are the Parts to a Garage Door?

Most homeowners tend to assume that a garage door by itself is a security feature that guards against thieves and burglars. However, either depending on the installation of the garage door or the materials used, there is generally a way that it can be bypassed or damaged by natural weather if not reinforced in some way. Ways to reinforce the security aspect of the garage door can include locks, keypads, and measures that prevent it from opening without your permission. A solid way of making sure it is built to last and to have it withstand more challenges than the average is capable is to have better parts. The garage door is largely made up of:

  • An assortment of springs
  • Several kinds of bolts and screws
  • Rubber seals
  • Paneling material
  • Rollers
  • Hinges
  • Belts
  • Garage door struts
  • Garage door brace
  • Garage door bracket

While not the most specific list, particular emphasis should be placed on the garage door strut and brace. For the average garage door, these parts are actually not necessary for it to operate. However, when you want a garage door that is secure and long-lasting then you’ll want these to be apart of the system. Especially when your system is motor operated, you will want garage door struts due to how the system operates. FEMA, in particular, recommends a garage door brace to protect your garage from high winds and storms. Keeping both and other parts in good condition is the easiest way to keep your garage door secured. Garage door brackets when in good condition help to keep the system running smoothly and operating soundly. When made of poor materials, you will run into the part snapping and often lead to more unfortunate problems. Use Smart Garage Door Service services like garage door bracket repair to take care of that problem and assist in the matter of keeping your garage door reinforced. Call 720-299-5604 today to set up your appointment.

How can I Strengthen my Garage Door?

Not only can you reinforce your garage door through taking care of the smaller parts like the garage door brackets and other smaller parts, but also through taking more external approaches as well. Specifically strengthening your garage door requires stronger materials, such as metals like steel. That way a person cannot enter through that entrance of your home by normal means and will likely give up when the challenge of breaching takes too much effort.

Especially for those that have traffic going through this entrance of your home however, this singular enhancement may not be enough. You can also add locks to your garage door by either setting up spots to hook it to or have it built-in internally and easily accessible, but still difficult to mess with. A modern enhancement you could consider is a dial pad or camera that you can access remotely. Just like how a garage door remote offers you the capability to control when the door opens and closes. Both a dial system and a pad with a camera offers you an increased amount of security on that front. Both make the entire process that moves the system, garage door brackets and all, to an automatic setting set by you. The reason it can be important is to offer you an ease of access while also delivering the capability of maintained security.

Why Does my Garage Door Buckle?

As mentioned earlier, for some residents high winds and severe storms can be a beating on a garage door. When a garage door is not designed to handle impacts and strain, the pannels will be the first to be affected, breaching your garage by way of them bending inward. Aside from getting stronger panels and garage door brackets made from better materials, this is where the talk of garage door struts come into play. The reason a garage door buckles is because the installation itself was not designed for more severe weather. Struts reinforce your door in the opening process and by giving it an extra way to resist constant high winds or heavy rain. While they are not required unless you have a motor run design, you may want to consider it for the best capacity possible out of your door. With struts, you put less strain on the smaller parts like the garage door brackets and have a proven improvement that is the a source for fewer repairs necessary.

How do I Know if my Garage Door Capacitor is Bad?

When opening your garage door, there may be a noise coming from the general system that handles the opening process of the garage. That would more than likely be the garage door capacitor that is the source of the issue, especially when the sound is accompanied by the actual door not opening. While it may be annoying, the issue is actually one that happens to many homeowners all the time and is a regular occurrence. The reason behind the machinery failing is due to overheating from the natural heat of the environment around it, corrosion, or another mechanical issue. Once replaced, it will get the job done and you will once more enjoy a garage that opens.

Another common issue that happens on the garage door is the breaking of the garage door brackets. More than likely, the bracket has been corroded or warped over time and just needs a replacement. You can simply replace it yourself with the right tools and spare parts. There is however another option, our technicians are ready and able to help you when you call 720-299-5604 to schedule an appointment. Have us come out to repair all of your garage related issues and we will get you a result you can be proud of.

How do I get my barn door back on track?

Barn door on worn red barn or garage in need of repair

Do barn doors lock?

For a farmer or rancher, one of the most frustrating things is when the barn door will not stay open.  A working farm or ranch doesn’t have time for barn door repair, which is why they keep maintenance upon them. When things are not as busy, hectic on a normal day, they will check every barn door and hardware, replace barn door bolts, and make any potential barn door repairs they see. If you need to understand, there is nobody better to ask than a farmer, rancher, farmhand or ranch hand.

Yes, they can. Once upon a time, farmers and ranchers didn’t have much to worry about thieves, so they may have closed the barn doors, “Don’t leave the barn door open!”. Rarely would they lock them, mainly because locks weren’t always available.

As time has progressed, locks are more readily available and with the world way it is today, farmers and ranchers do lock their barn doors now. Both have valuable equipment, not to mention the livestock, that could be stolen, so if they have to have barn door repair done, they will either have a new lock installed or get a one themselves.

You may lock a single-hung barn door with a hasp and lock. Double-hung doors will typically be locked with a chain through the handles and a lock. Modern-day, new construction barn doors may have other locking systems.

How do you adjust a barn door?

Your barn doors have been working great for years. You get your animals, heavy machinery, hay and other supplies in and out daily, had no trouble with the barn door opening or closing.  Your barn was a good size investment and needed to protect other expensive investments. Now, out of nowhere, the barn door isn’t opening or closing correctly. Just what you need an unexpected expense of barn door repair!

Or do you? Here we offer a five-step process where you can do your own barn door repair.

  • Assess and Evaluate the Situation: First, check the outer rollers and the upward rollers. Sometimes they need a minor adjustment. Maybe they were bumped by an animal or the tractor going in or out, maybe the ground shifted. Regardless of how they got out of line, making the necessary adjustment will get them properly aligned and working well. How do you know which to adjust which rollers? If the door is leaning in at the top, adjust the center rollers down and the outer rollers up. If the door is leaning in at the bottom, adjust the center roller up and the outer rollers down. If barn door repair is new to you, it could take you a few tries to get it right.
  • Check the Guides: The next step of your barn door repair is to check the exterior hardware to see how much room before it and the center guide meet. Depending on the distance between the bottom rail and center guide, the doors will need to be lowered or raised or lowered. Next, examine the T-guides at the end of both door openings that keep it attached to the jamb. Are the doors pulling or resting on your T-guide? How they are sitting will determine if you need to lower or raise the doors so that they are sitting comfortably without rubbing in the middle of the track.
  • Inspect The Roller: Next for your barn door repair, check the track the rollers follow. Make sure they are secure and clear of any debris. You may need to adjust the rollers down or up with the door.
  • Lower or Raise the Door: We’re almost done with a barn door repair project!   Loosen the jam nut to lower or raise the door, that is the bolt that is connected to the roller. As you loosen or tighten, you’ll notice the door to get a slight bend, and that is perfectly normal, up to a 90° bend as it pulls or pushes the door at the header. If all looks right to you, tighten up the jam nut.
  • Are the Doors Aligned?: Make sure they are aligned, sitting parallel to each other, and gliding smoothly through both guides. Double-check the jam nut is tight! Now you’re done with your barn door repair project!

How do you fix a sliding barn door?

It depends on what’s wrong.  If the doors aren’t sliding, the above-described steps are the barn door repair you need.  If the doors are not any good, then barn door construction is the best option.

  • Start by measuring the opening that the doors will cover. Depending on that, you can decide if you need one door on a hinge or two doors sliding to replace what is there. The construction is basically the same, with the exception the sliding doors will be a little wider for the side overlap.
  • Once you know the size, using 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 boards, build the frame to the size you’ve measured. Cut the outside frame at 45-degree cuts on both ends and then place them down on a flat surface, drilling a screw in each end. To square the frame, measure the diagonals and square the frame. Then cut a board that will bisect the big rectangle, and to put equal distance from the inside ends, make two small ones and toe-screw the outside frame.
  • Next, cut diagonal braces that run from what will be the bottom inside and top inside to the middle.  You should now have a frame similar to a digital “8”, so check to make sure all is still square and then metal plates on each intersection of wood with 1” drywall screws through each board, 3 per board. This is the interior side of the door.
  • Now stand the frame up to the opening and cut off any chunks of wood to brace it, then attached the hinges or the rollers, depending on which kind of door you want. For a hanging door, attach the top rollers first, then slide it in the track.
  • Last step, hang the metal on the frame, starting in the middle for swinging doors, making sure the ribs are covering each door with an overlap in the middle.

Do barn doors need a bottom track?

If they are sliding doors, yes. Otherwise, they would simply swing back and forth. If the doors are on hinges to open outward, one to the left and one to the right, a bottom track isn’t necessary but will keep the doors from swinging both directions, unless you want them to.

Barn door on honey colored wood barn with thresh roof

How far does a barn door stick out from the wall?

It will depend on how thick the barn doors are, but you should determine this after the door is hanging, using the center point and making sure the door width fits the track for sliding doors. Making sure the doors to your barn a secure is important and worth the expense you endure to protect your investments inside the barn. If the need to hire an outside contractor for barn door repair is necessary, keep those investments in mind. Call 720-299-5604 today for your barn door repair in Aurora, CO.

Why is my garage door sticking?

A common reason as to why you have a sticking garage door is misalignment or tracks not being level. When this occurs your garage door will tend to shimmy on the tracks to compensate which can sometimes cause it to get stuck as it makes its way down. In situations when the springs are loose your garage door can move unevely as it makes its way up and down the tracks. Another issue that can cause the door to not budge is with uncleanliness. A build-up of dirt, dust and other debris can buildup over time around tracks and rollers which can cause them to be blocked or stuck on their natural path. By cleaning these areas not only do you ensure proper movement you’ll also increase the lifespan of the parts of your garage door. Another issue that may arise is with the weather, oftentimes extreme changes in temperatures can cause the lubricant to either dry up or springs to get frozen. What more the materials your garage door is made out of can be affected. Take for instance wood, this material can easily warp or swell with temperature changes to the point where replacement is necessary. Aluminum, on the other hand, can be prone to denting.

Does cracking your garage door help?

If your house is having trouble being cooled in the summer cracking your garage door open a bit can assist in this endeavor. Just like the rest of your home your garage door should be properly sealed and insulated to keep cool air in, yet cracking the garage door may release some heat. What is the Lifespan of a Garage Door?

When it comes to choosing a garage door, we don’t necessarily think about the material that we want. In terms of materials that can be used there are a couple of options, which include aluminum, fiberglass, steel, vinyl, wood, and wood composite. All of these materials have their own special characteristics that make them appealing. Aluminum is a good material because it is lightweight, fiberglass can imitate any type of material, steel is very low maintenance, vinyl are resistant against dents, and wood or wood composite are aesthetically pleasing.

Steel Garage Doors Pros and Cons

When deciding if steel garage doors are the best material for your new garage, its important to weigh both the pros and cons of steel garage doors. By having this type of knowledge, you can make a better decision on the garage for your home. These are the benefits of steel garage doors.

  • Durability: This type of material will not rust, warp, dent, or crack. Because its a metal material, people tend to ask, “How much does a steel garage door weigh?” and they can weight anywhere from 130 to 200 pounds.
  • Affordable: Not only are steel garage doors a lot more sturdy than most materials, but they are also more affordable, as well.

  • Versatile: These garage doors can come in different colors, shapes, and even textures, so you can fit the aesthetic of your home.

As far as disadvantages of steel garage doors, there are only a few you need to be aware of. While a steel garage door can provide you with better insulation, it’s going to depend on the quality of the steel used. They are an affordable garage door, but if you want to ensure that your steel garage door is well insulated, you will need to spend a little bit more. In order to prevent rusting on a steel garage door, it’s important that you get some sort of waterproof coat. Steel can become dull or start to rust if they don’t have the proper coatings.
